EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State was in first place in the 15-team Waterlefe/South Florida Invitational after shooting a first-round 299 on Monday at the Waterlefe Country Club in Sarasota, Fla. The Spartans led host South Florida by six strokes after round one and looked to build on that in the second round, which was suspended and will be completed Tuesday along with the third and final round.
Junior Kasey Gant (Fort Wayne, Ind.) fired a three-under-par 69 - just the fourth round under 70 in MSU history, all shot by her - in the first round. She stood in second place individually after one round, one stroke behind Angie Connell of South Florida, and was in the lone threesome which did not complete second-round play Monday.
Michigan State, which last week won the championship at the Peggy Kirk Bell Invitational, shot its fourth-lowest team score of the year in the opening round.
The other four Spartans all finished the second round, with three of them improving upon their first-round scores in the afternoon. All five Spartans are in the top 30 individually at the brand new, 5,909-yard, par-72 course.
Play concludes Tuesday as the final threesome will complete the second round before the final round begins.
