Women's Golf Finishes 11th At TRW Regional Challenge

EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State's women's golf team shot a final-round 309 on Wednesday to finish with a three-day total of 312-300-309=921, good for 11th place out of 18 teams at the TRW Regional Challenge in Palos Verdes Estates, Calif. The Spartans were the top Big Ten finishers and were ahead of six teams ranked above them at the 5,912-yard, par-71 Palos Verdes Golf Club.
Third-ranked Arizona won the tournament with a 288-291-290=869 total, holding off No. 2 Southern Cal by 10 strokes. Georgia's Shauna Estes shot a 73-68-74=212 to claim top individual honors.
Sophomore Stacy Snider (Grand Rapids, Mich.) led Michigan State with a three-round 74-72-77=223, good for a share of 15th place individually. Sophomore Emily Bastel (Upper Sandusky, Ohio) and junior Kasey Gant (Fort Wayne, Ind.) had the Spartans' best rounds on Wednesday, as the two shot matching four-over-par 75s. Bastel finished in a tie for 29th place (77-76-75=228), while Gant tied for 43rd (82-74-75=231).
Michigan State finished in 11th despite entering the tournament with the second-lowest ranking of the 18 participants, according to the Golfweek/Sagarin Rankings. Only SMU, ranked 78th, was ranked below No. 42 Michigan State in the field. The Spartans finished ahead of three top-15 teams, including No. 11 Purdue, the highest-ranked Big Ten squad.
Michigan State is off for the next two weeks before returning to action Feb. 25-27 in the Midwest Classic in Dallas, Texas.
