TOUGH START: For the first time this season the Michigan State men's tennis team dropped two consecutive dual matches in a row. MSU was defeated by No. 9 Virginia Commonwealth, 7-0, on Saturday while falling 6-1, on Sunday, to No. 20 Virginia. Robert Topalo was the only victorious Spartan in singles action. The senior defeated Virginia's John Winter at No. 3 singles, 4-6, 6-4, 6-2. Jimmy McGuire and Ivica Primorac beat Mats Norin and Olie Lundberg of VCU 8-6 at No. 2 doubles. Virginia Commonwealth featured the top ranked singles player in the nation along with two others individually ranked in singles. They also put the No. 6 doubles tandem on the court. Virginia featured two ranked singles players, including No. 4 overall, along with two ranked doubles teams.
PLAYING THE BEST: The schedule does not get any easier for the Spartans. Coming off dual matches against two top twenty teams, MSU must now face three teams in a row on the road that are highly ranked. The Spartans travel to the 16 team H.E.B. Collegiate Team Championships in Corpus Christi, Texas, March 3-5. The Spartans' first opponent is No. 15 TCU. Following the tournament, MSU travels to No. 11 Southern Methodist and No. 21 Minnesota. Michigan State carries a 5-6 record into the H.E.B. Championships. The Spartans do not have another home dual match until they host conference foes Purdue and Indiana on Saturday, April 8 and Sunday, April 9.
