Women's Golf Claims Third Place At Midwest Classic

EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State's women's golf team shot a final-round 317 on Sunday - the second-best team score of the day - to finish in third place out of 16 teams at the Midwest Classic in Dallas, Texas. Michigan State's three-round 313-315-317=945 was nine strokes behind tournament champion TCU (936) at the 5,838-yard, par-72 Hyatt Bear Creek Golf Club.
Sophomore Emily Bastel (Upper Sandusky, Ohio) claimed fourth place individually, equaling her best finish of the 1999-2000 season. Bastel shot a three-round 71-80-78=229 and was just three strokes behind medallist Angela Stanford of TCU (226).
All five Spartans finished in the top 30 of the tournament, which featured 82 golfers. Ten strokes behind Bastel was redshirt freshman Shellie Morton (Detroit, Mich.), who posted her first career top-20 individual finish with a tie for 11th (82-79-78=239). Junior Kasey Gant (Fort Wayne, Ind.) and sophomore Stacy Snider (Grand Rapids, Mich.) were tied for 26th at 244, while freshman Jessica Till (Fort Wayne, Ind.) finished in a tie for 29th at 245.
The Spartans were the top finishers among the eight Big Ten schools at the event. MSU, ranked 39th in the latest Sagarin/Golfweek rankings, also finished ahead of a pair of teams ranked above them in No. 30 Nebraska (fourth at 948) and No. 27 Northwestern (fifth at 957).
Michigan State returns to action Monday and Tuesday, March 13-14, at the Peggy Kirk Bell Invitational in Orlando, Fla.
