EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State's women's golf team battled through a rain delay and shot a first-round 313 on Friday, good for fourth place out of 16 teams after one day at the Midwest Classic in Dallas, Texas. Sophomore Emily Bastel (Upper Sandusky, Ohio) led the way at the 5,838-yard, par-72 Hyatt Bear Creek Golf Club, firing a one-under-par 71 to claim the individual lead. Play continues Saturday and Sunday with 18 holes each day.
The Spartans are just seven shots behind first-place TCU (306) and three shots behind Northwestern and Missouri, who are tied for second at 310.
Bastel, in search of the first tournament title of her collegiate career, leads Lori Sutherland (TCU) and Emily Gilley (Northwestern) by one shot each. Bastel equaled her career low with her first-round 71.
Bastel's classmate, Stacy Snider (Grand Rapids, Mich.), is also in the top 20 for the Spartans, standing in a tie for 18th after firing a 79 in the first round. Junior Kasey Gant (Fort Wayne, Ind.) is tied for 28th at 81.
The tournament continues with 18 holes on Saturday and Sunday.
