EAST LANSING, Mich. -
NEXT MEET - Michigan State will host the Spartan Invitational on Saturday, February 26 at 7:30 p.m., which will feature No. 21 New Hampshire, Southeast Missouri State and Bowling Green. The meet will be held at Jenison Field House on the campus of Michigan State.
SERIES RECORDS - Michigan State leads the series for the Spartan Invitational, 27-5. Overall, MSU is 12-5 against New Hampshire, 7-1 against Southeast Missouri State and 10-1 against Bowling Green.
LAST YEAR - In the 1999 Spartan Invitational, MSU went up against Nebraska, Illinois-Chicago and Towson. MSU finished second (193.050) behind Nebraska (195.025), Illinois-Chicago finished third (191.350) and Towson finished fourth (191.250).
LAST MEET - The Michigan State women's gymnastics team defeated Pittsburgh at home on Saturday, February 19 in what was the team's second-best finish in Spartan history, winning 196.100-195.225.
As a team, Michigan State notched a third-place finish in the record books with a 49.425 on the uneven bars and reached season-highs in two other events: the vault (48.900) and the floor exercise (49.475).
COMPETITORS ENVY GREEN - Melissa Green (Jr., East Lansing, Mich.) had the best performance of her tenure at Michigan State against Pittsburgh, achieving three career highs in one night. Green landed a 9.975 on the floor exercise, tying the MSU all-time individual record. Green also had the second-best score ever in MSU's history in the all-around (39.400) and scored a 9.950 on the uneven bars, which moved her into second-place on that all-time list.
FABULOUS FRESHMEN - Freshmen Diana Crea (Beaver Falls, Pa.), Christy Linder (Fremont, Ohio) and Lindsay Trainham (Briarcliff, N.Y.) all had a 9.900 career-high finish on the uneven bars to tie for 10th place on the MSU all-time bar list. Linder also scored career-highs in the all-around (39.150), vault (9.700) and the floor exercise (9.850). Trainham landed a 9.800 on the vault and a 9.775 on the floor exercise, both of which are career-highs.
NEARLY PERFECT - Melissa Green earned a 10 on the floor exercise from one judge, marking only the third perfect 10 in MSU history. Polly Kiker followed Green's example and also scored a 10 from one judge on the floor exercise, making hers only the fourth in the history of Michigan State gymnastics.
IN THE RANKINGS - As a team, MSU remains at 20th on the uneven bars with an average score of 48.527. Individually, Melissa Green is sixth in the all-around with an average score of 39.400 and she also moved up 10 notches from 21st to 11th on the unveven bars (9.858). Marny Oestreng, from Bowling Green, is 17th on the uneven bars with an average of 9.846 and two athletes from New Hampshire are ranked on the balance beam: Cara Lepper is 15th (9.796) while Suzanne Poretz (9.792) is 16th.
