Men Swim to First Place, Women in Third Place

SOUTH BEND, Ind. - The Michigan State swimming and diving teams completed the second day of events Friday at the Notre Dame Invitational. The Spartans lead the men's teams with a score of 953 points, followed by Notre Dame with 846. The women's team is currently in third place with a score of 731.5. Dension leads the women's competition with 856.5 points.
Senior John Munley, (Kalamazoo, Mich.) completed an exceptional performance over the two days, breaking two Notre Dame pool records, swimming 1:38.09 in the 200 free, and 4:28.44 in the 500 free. Munley also contributed to the Spartans first place position with the 800 free relay team of Joe Brennan (Poway, Calif.), Rick Nichols (Mercersberg, Penn.), and Scott Shafer (Centerville, Va.), which also broke the pool record with a time of 6:41.42. Other first place finishes include freshman Lars Neubauer (Meerbusch, Germany) in the 100 yard breaststroke(56.83).
For the women's team, junior Carly Weiden (Kentwood, Mich.) provided a first place finish in the one and three meter dives. Ildiko Szelkely (Budapest, Hungary) finished second in the 400 individual medley with a time of 4:26.94.
Head coach Jim Lutz stated he was "real encouraged with the team and what they're doing. The men's 800 relay team won the race by almost a full length...It shows they're swimming really tough and with unity."
The Spartans conclude the invitational Saturday in South Bend.
