Swimming Teams Off to Strong Start In South Bend

SOUTH BEND, Ind. - The Michigan State swimming and diving teams finished the first round of preliminary events Thursday at the Notre Dame Invitational.
Sixteen of the Spartans placed in the top ten of their respective events, including first place performances by sophomore Joe Brennan (Poway, Calif.) in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 4:35.59, and sophomore Kate Duncombe (Erie, Pa.) in the 200 individual medley with 2:06.98. Senior Chad Ganden (Lisle, Ill.) also exhibited a noteworthy performance, breaking a three-way tie for seventh place in the 50 free with a time of 21.52 in a swim-off and advancing to the finals.
Among the schools participating in the invitational are Columbia, Denison, Harvard, Illinois-Chicago, Northern Michigan, Western Kentucky, and host Notre Dame.
The Spartans continue the swimming action Friday at 10 a.m.
