Men's Soccer Falls To Penn State, 2-1

East Lansing, Mich. - The Michigan State men's soccer team fell to Penn State 2-1 on Friday at the Big Ten Tournament in Columbus, Ohio to end their season. The Spartans finished the year 11-6-2, their best season since 1996 when they finished 12-5-2.
The Nittany Lions struck first on a goal by Pete Shellenberger 14:17 into the game to stake a 1-0 lead they would take into halftime. In the second half, Penn State's Derek Petteigers scored what proved to be the game winner , making it 2-0 in the 61st minute. The Spartans spoiled the Lions attempt for the shutout in the 76th minute when senior John Benoist (St. Louis, Mo.) scored on a penalty kick.
The Spartans outshot the Nittany Lions by a count of 11-6. Senior goalkeeper T.J. Lieckfelt (Sterling Heights) made three stops.
