EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State women's swim team defeated the Iowa Hawkeyes this afternoon at the McCaffree pool in East Lansing. The Spartans achieved several first place finshes, including Jutta Renner in the 200 free (1:53.91), Katie Duncombe in the 200 IM (2:05.43) and 200 backstroke (2:02.98), and Ildiko Szekely in the 200 butterfly (2:03.47).
Divers Carly Weiden, Summer Mitchell, and Stephanie Anisko greatly aided the Spartan win by capturing first, second and third place in the 1-meter and 3-meter dives. The 200 medley relay team, comprised of Katie Duncombe, Debbie O'Neil, Ildiko Szekely, and Jessica Brutz finished first as well, with a time of 1:46.64.
Head coach Jim Lutz stated "the swim teams have a lot of character, drive, and determination, and this makes it easy to set standards higher than they've ever been." This was Lutz's first home meet coaching the Spartans.
The Spartans head to Evanston tomorrow for the Northwestern Relays.
