East Lansing, Mich. - The Michigan State men's soccer team overpowered Norwestern 6-2 on Sunday at Old College Field to improve to 5-4 on the season. Northwestern drops to 0-8 on the season.
Michigan State struck twice in the first half on goals by Craig Hearn (Fr., Farmington Hills) and Nick DeGraw (So., Clinton Twp.). In the second half, the Spartans added to their lead early when Nick DeGraw scored his second goal of the game at the 51:16 mark. Just 33 seconds later Thomas Trivelloni (Fr., Mt. Clemens) made the score 4-0. John Minagawa-Webster (Fr., Monroe) assisted on both goals. Northwestern's Matt Miclea scored unassisted at the 64:15 mark to make the score 4-1.
Brian Spitzkeit (Jr., Overland Park, KS) scored the Spartans fifth goal while Jeremy Seney (Jr., Waverly) closed out the Spartans scoring to make it 6-1. The Wildcats's Brandon Swalve ended the scoring when he made it 6-2.
"After a dismal performance Friday against Valparaiso, we either had to sink or swim. Today we had more jump and more desire to score, " explained head coach Joe Baum. "Scoring early helped today, but we just gave a better all around effort."
