MT. PLEASANT, Mich. - Senior Nick Muzashvili (Sr., Rep. of Georgia) remains unbeaten following his 11-6 victory over Central Michigan?s Chris Vike. Muzashivili, a 197 pounder, has been ranked No. 1 in the 197 pound division the entire season and was recently invited to the 2000 NWCA All-Star Classic, which pits the top two individuals in each weight class against one another. That event will be held in East Lansing on Feb. 7.
With their victory over Central Michigan the Spartans improved their dual record to 3-1 on the season and have now beaten a ranked squad for the second time this year. MSU also improved its all-time record against CMU to 11-3 following Friday nights victory. In addition to Muzashvili six other Spartans came up winners in their weight divisions.
Spartans Karl Nadolsky (R-Fr., Holland, Mich.), Gray Maynard (R-Fr., Las Vegas, Nev.), and Greg DeGrand (Sr., Ann Arbor, Mich.) reeled off three straight wins to open the dual. Nadolsky scored a 12-7 victory over CMU?s Jeremy Hardman to open the meet in the 149 pound division. Maynard gave the Spartans a 9-0 lead following his pin (4:40) of Russell Clark in the 157 pound division, while the 165-pounder DeGrand posted a close 4-3 win over the Chippewas? Vernon Cannon. Will Hill (Sr., Indianapolis, Ind.) gave MSU its fourth straight win of the night in the 174 pound class following the disqualification of CMU?s Ryan Cunningham.
Following Phil Baroni?s 9-5 victory over MSU?s James Brimm (Jr., Evansville, Ind.) in the 184 pound class the Spartans again racked up three straight victories. Jump starting things for MSU was Muzashvili, who was then followed by heavyweight Matt Lamb (Jr., Camden, N.J.) and 125 pounder Chris Williams (So., Fowlerville, Mich.). Lamb easily disposed of CMU?s Jack Leffler with a 14-5 major decision and Williams posted an exciting 6-4 overtime win over Ahmad Sanders for his 20th win of the season.
The Chippewas kept things respectable by closing out the meet with two straight wins. CMU?s Jordan Webster won the 133 pound division by forfeit and Chris Marshall defeated MSU?s Mike Castillo (Jr., Ada, Mich.) by a score of 9-3 in the 141 pound class.
MSU will go for its fourth straight victory Sunday in East Lansing against Kent at 1:00 p.m. inside Jenison Wrestling Arena. MSU-CMU Match/score CMU MSU
