EAST LANSING, Mich. - East Lansing, Mich. - The Michigan State women's tennis team opened the spring season Saturday afternoon with a 6-1 dual-match loss to Bowling Green. The Spartans begin the season 0-1, while the Falcons improve to 2-0.
Junior Kelli Hayes (Munster, Ind.) recorded the only win for MSU, a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Abby Bratten. Bowling Green won the remaining five singles matches and took the doubles point for the 6-1 final.
The loss spoiled the debut of new Spartan head coach Tim Bauer, who took over the program just three weeks ago. Despite the defeat, however, Bauer remained upbeat.
"We had some bright spots today, and Kelli Hayes played a good match for us," said Bauer. "We just have some work to do on the basics, the little things like raising our first-serve percentage in singles and being aggressive at the net in doubles. We didn't win on the scoreboard, but we did some good things and we're headed in the right direction."
Michigan State returns to action on Feb. 5 with a 1 p.m. dual match at Miami of Ohio. MSU then returns home for duals against Eastern Michigan on Feb. 11 and Illinois-Chicago on Feb. 18.
