NEXT MEET - Michigan State will compete against their intrastate rival, Michigan, in Ann Arbor on Thursday, January 20 at 7 p.m.
SERIES RECORDS - MSU is 24-19 against No. 3 Michigan, losing its last dual meet to the Wolverines, 197.100-181.600 on March 20, 1999.
The last meeting between the two teams was a week later at the Big Ten Championships where Michigan won 196.300-191.600 on March 27, 1999 in East Lansing.
LAST MEET - The Spartans placed first in the Mizzou Gymnastics X-Treme (193.125) on January 16 at the University of Missouri. Overall, Illinois State placed second (191.875), while Missouri finished third (191.350), followed by Kent (188.350) and Western Michigan (186.375).
Michigan State individuals placed first in every individual event except floor exercise (2nd). The only event that the Spartans did not win as a team was the vault (47.925), also placing second. Junior Elisabeth Forshier placed first in the vault with a 9.825, while freshman Lindsay Trainham tied for second with a 9.675. Junior Melissa Green (Jr., East Lansing, Mich.) and senior Polly Kiker tied for first on the uneven bars with a 9.875. Sophomore Jane McIntosh notched a first place finish on the balance beam, tying Alison Akers from the University of Missouri with a 9.875. Kiker also placed second on the floor exercise with a 9.800, while McIntosh tied for third with a 9.750. Trainham finished first in the all-around with a 38.900, while freshman Christy Linder scored a 37.975 to finish fifth.
BEST SECOND-MEET SCORE EVER - MSU?s 193.125 in its win at the Mizzou Gymnastics X-Treme on Jan. 16 was the best second-meet team score in school history, eclipsing the 193.050 the Spartans scored in a 193.900-193.050 loss to LSU on Jan. 17, 1997.
The 193.125 would have been the second-best score of the season in 1999. The Spartans, injury-ridden last year, have rebounded in 2000 and are currently averaging 191.875 as a team.
FRESHMEN EMERGE AS TOP ALL-AROUNDERS - Freshmen Lindsay Trainham and Christy Linder have each placed in an all-around in the Spartans? first two meets. Trainham won with a 38.900 at the Mizzou Gymnastics X-Treme on Jan. 16 while Linder finished third in the all-around in MSU?s opener with a 37.675.
IN THE RANKINGS - The Spartans are ranked 21st this week, based on high score. As a team, MSU is 21st on beam (48.375), tied for 22nd on floor (48.500) and 25th on uneven bars (48.325).
