EAST LANSING, Mich. - Sophomore Carly Weiden (Kentwood, Mich.) set a Lewellen Aquatic Center record with a score of 309.525 on 3-meter diving in the Spartans? 151-92 victory over Ball State Sunday, Jan. 16.
Weiden?s score breaks the previous record of 307.50 set by Ball State?s Beth Clark on Nov. 19, 1999. Weiden also received second in the 1-meter (268.575).
Freshman Deb O?Neil (Chalfont, Pa.) stepped up for the Spartans, earning two first-place finishes. O?Neil swam the 500-yard freestyle in 5:07.67 and the 1,000 freestyle in 10:26.04.
Other top Spartan finishers were Dianne Oliver (Louisville, Ky.), Jutta Renner (Hildesheim, Germany), Ashby Baldock (Talahassee, Fla.) and Heather Wellings (Simpsonville, S.C.). Oliver captured first in the 50 freestyle (24.29). Renner finished first in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:55.88. Baldock swam the 200 backstroke in 2:08.48 for first place. Wellings won the breaststroke event with a time of 2:26.37.
The Michigan State women?s swimming and diving team will be in action again on Jan. 28 when they host Indiana and Penn State. The meet starts at 6 p.m.
