EAST LANSING, MICH. - The Michigan State men?s soccer team captured its first victory of the season Monday afternoon, defeating the Cleveland State Vikings, 4-0, at Old College Field on the MSU campus.
Senior Keith Gordon (Birmingham, Mich.) led the Spartan attack with two goals, both coming in the first half. Junior John Benoist (St. Louis) also scored for the Spartans in the first period on a breakaway goal, finishing a pass from teammate Steve Arce (Windsor, Ont.). In the second half, junior Rick Smith (Tecumseh, Mich.) tallied his first goal of the season on an assist by junior Mike Trivelloni (Mt. Clemens, Mich.).
"We came out with a mission today," said MSU Coach Joe Baum. "We knew we had to come out and play well, and we did just that right from the start. The first goal took some pressure off our guys, and the rest of the game they played with focus and composure. I am very pleased with the win."
Michigan State?s record improves to 1-1-1, while Cleveland State falls to 1-2.
Michigan State returns to action Thursday, Sept. 9, as it hosts the Eastern Michigan Eagles at Old College Field. The game begins at 4:00 p.m.
