EAST LANSING, MICH. - The Michigan State men?s soccer team (4-3-1, 0-1 Big Ten) defeated the Loyola-Chicago Ramblers (4-4-1), 2-0, Wednesday afternoon at Old College Field on the MSU campus.
Sophomores Jeremy Seney (Lansing, Mich.) and Brett Konley (Plymouth, Mich.) led the way for the Spartans. Seney scored his first collegiate goal at the 70:09 mark on a pass from Konley, striking a shot above Rambler goalie Joseph Trimberger. Less than four minutes later, Konley blasted a foul kick from about 25 yards out into the right corner of the goal, putting MSU on top, 2-0.
?The goal felt great,? said Konley. ?It gave us the momentum we were looking for in sealing the victory. We really needed this game- the guys stepped up and proved that we can come back from a couple of losses and still play good soccer.?
Spartan goalkeeper Tim Lieckfelt (Sterling Heights, Mich.) recorded four saves on the day, and picked up his second shutout of the season. Overall, MSU outshot the Ramblers, 10-7.
?I thought we came out flat, but we definitely picked up the enthusiasm in the second half,? said MSU Head Coach Joe Baum. ?We made some big plays, and Brett (Konley) really brought us up by playing an excellent game.?
Michigan State returns to action on Sunday, October 3. The Spartans travel to Chicago to face the Flames of Illinois-Chicago. The game will begin at 2:00 p.m.
