Spartans' Hold Seventh at Mary Fossum Invitational

EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State's women's golf team shot a first-round 320 and finished seventh for the day among the 18 teams at the Mary Fossum Invitational. Golfers were not able to finish their second rounds, play will resume at 7:30 a.m. on Sunday. Indiana University led the tournament at the end of the first round with a score of 298.
The Spartans are attempting to defend its 1998 Mary Fossum Invitational championship, but are doing so without junior star Kasey Gant (Fort Wayne, Ind.), out for the weekend with soreness in her right shoulder.
Head coach Stacy Slobonik said, ?I think the potential is there and we?re just not showing for it for whatever reason. The team is going through some growing pains and not playing with our No. 1 player is tough to swallow.?
Sophomore Stacy Snider (Grand Rapids, Mich.) led the Spartans in the first round, finishing in a tie for 14th at 38-39=77. Freshman Jessica Till (Fort Wayne, Ind.) finished in a tie for 26th at 45-34=79. Following Till was sophomore Emily Bastel (Upper Sandusky, Ohio), who tied for 41st at 41-40=81.
Heading into tomorrow, Slobonik?s goal is for the Spartans to break 310. ?It?s a difficult task whether you are at home or away,? Slobonik said. ?We are just so young and what we have to remember is we are going to get better.?
Tournament action continues at the Forest Akers West Golf Course tomorrow at 7:30 a.m., and the final round will start with a 9:30 a.m. shotgun start.
