EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State freshman Katie Duncombe (Erie, Pa.) will join swimmers John Munley (Kalamazoo) and Aaron Mahaney (Easton, Pa.) as a qualifier for the 2000 U.S. Olympic trials due to a change in the standards by the U.S. Swimming and Governing Body. Duncombe competed at the U.S. Summer Nationals, finishing 24th in the 100-meter backstroke in 1:05.70. Under the prior standards, Duncombe had missed the cut by only .3 seconds.
Both the men's and women's swimming and diving teams begin their seasons Oct. 1 with the Green and White Meet, which is followed by the Alumni meet. The men open the regular season in the Oakland Invitational, Oct. 29, while the women open at home against Michigan, Oct. 30.
