Women's Golf Finishes Ninth At Lady Northern

EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State's women's golf team shot a final-round 320 and finished in ninth place among the 16 teams at the Lady Northern in Madison, Wis. The Spartans finished with a three-round total of 324-314-320=958, 62 shots behind tournament champion Purdue (303-300-293=896).
The Spartans were attempting to win the tournament for the second consecutive season, but were doing so without junior star Kasey Gant (Fort Wayne, Ind.), out for the weekend with soreness in her right shoulder.
Sophomore Emily Bastel (Upper Sandusky, Ohio), who led the team with a 77.36 stroke average last season, was the top Spartan golfer this weekend, finishing in a tie for 20th place individually. Bastel shot a three-round 77-77-79=233.
Freshman Jessica Till (Fort Wayne, Ind.) had an impressive debut tournament, finishing in a tie for 40th at 81-78-81=240. Just behind Till was sophomore Stacy Snider (Grand Rapids, Mich.), tied for 46th at 82-78-83=243.
The Lady Northern, held at the 5,962-yard, par-72 University Ridge Golf Course, features all 11 Big Ten schools and serves as a preview for the Big Ten Championship to be held at the course next spring.
Michigan State returns to action next weekend, Sept. 25-26, as the Spartans hope to defend their team title on their home course at the Mary Fossum Invitational. Tee times begin at 7:45 a.m. Saturday. The teams will play 54 holes Saturday at Forest Akers West Course and 18 holes on Sunday, starting with a 9:30 a.m. shotgun start.
