EAST LANSING, Mich - The Michigan State women?s soccer team made its 1999 home debut this afternoon and battled to a 1-1 overtime tie against Central Michigan.
CMU accounted for the game's initial score at the 62:20 mark when junior Kjersten Kuhlman slipped a shot past Spartan goalkeeper Sara Kloosterman (Farmington) from about 20 yards out. The Spartans fought back and tied the game at 78:28 when senior Jessica Moorman blasted one home from 15 yards. In the overtime, MSU had enjoyed the best scoring opportunity, but Chippewa sophomore keeper Elizabeth Quiney stymied the Spartans' Kim Van Cleef from close range.
The Spartans enjoyed a 12-9 edge in shot attempts and finished the match with a 5-3 advantage in corner kicks. Kloosterman finished the game with five saves while Quiney registered seven stops, six in the second half and overtime. The tie leaves MSU's record at 0-1-1 while CMU is now 1-0-1. "We didn't play particularly well early on, but as the game went on I thought that we came around," said MSU head coach Tom Saxton. "We still have some work to do, but I was encouraged by the fact that we fought back."
MSU resumes action next Friday (Sept. 3) when it hosts Eastern Michigan starting at 4:00 p.m. at Old College Field on the MSU campus.
