EAST LANSING, Mich. -- The Michigan State womens soccer team fought back from a pair of one-goal deficits on Friday afternoon, but it wasn't enough as Bowling Green junior Michelle Lisy's goal at 99:46 lifted the Falcons to a 3-2 overtime win in the season opener for both squads.
BGSU sophomore Desiree Erb scored the game's first goal just 5:52 into the contest. MSU countered with junior Kim Van Cleef tying the game at 41:41. In the second half, Erb pushed BGSU ahead by a goal with her second marker at 62:26. However, junior forward Becky Wilger (Cincinnati, OH) drew the Spartans even just 26 seconds later. With both teams unable to score over the remaining 27 minutes, the game went into overtime, setting the stage for Lisy's heroics.
MSU junior Mara Lee (Allison Park, PA) finished the game with five saves, three in the overtime session while her counterpart, freshman Erika Flanders posted six stops. The Spartans enjoyed a 18-14 edge in shot attempts while the Falcons finished the match with a 6-2 edge in corner kicks.
MSU will look to even its season mark on Sunday (Aug. 29) when it makes its home debut against Central Michigan starting at 1:00 p.m. The contest will be played at Old College Field on the MSU campus.
