Two Spartans Qualify for U.S. Olympic Swimming Trials

EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State swimmers John Munley (Kalamazoo) and Aaron Mahaney (Easton, Pa.) qualified for the 2000 U.S. Olympic trials last week at the U.S. Summer Nationals in Minneapolis, Minn. Five other Spartans competed in the meet, held from Aug. 6 through Aug. 11.
Munley, a junior, finished 10th in the 200-meter freestyle with a time of one minute, 51.47 seconds to qualify for the Olympic trials which will be held next August. Munley also took 19th in the 400 freestyle.
Mahaney finished 16th in the 200 butterfly to qualify for next year?s Olympic trials.
Incoming freshman Katie Duncombe (Erie, Pa.) and junior Mike Tingley (Louisville, Ky.) just missed the cutoff times to qualify for the Olympic trials in their events. Duncombe finished 24th in the 100 backstroke in 1:05.70, while Tingley was 40th in the 200 backstroke in 2:07.20.
Also competing at the U.S. Summer Nationals were senior Dianne Oliver (Louisville, Ky.) and incoming freshmen Joe Brennan (San Diego, Calif.) and Jessica Brutz (Johnstown, Pa.).
Both the men?s and women?s swimming and diving teams begin their seasons Oct. 1 with the Green and White Meet, which is followed Oct. 2 by the Alumni Meet. The men open the regular season in the Oakland Invitational Oct. 29, while the women open at home against Michigan Oct. 30.
