EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Notre Dame women's soccer team, ranked No. 2 in the nation, defeated Michigan State, 4-0, this afternoon in a game played at Old College Field on the MSU campus. It was the season opener for both squads.
Leading the way for the Fighting Irish was senior forward Monica Gerardo with a pair of goals while sophomore midfielder Anne Makinen chipped in one goal and one assist. Notre Dame finished the contest with a 30-3 edge in shot attempts and enjoyed a 6-0 advantage in corner kicks. Spartan sophomore goalkeeper Sara Kloosterman came up with 13 saves in the game.
"This game is something to build upon," said MSU head coach Tom Saxton. "Our players were well aware of the Notre Dame's level and I definitely believe that there was more positive coming out of the game than negative. It is a good measuring stick for us. We were getting tired of playing ourselves everyday in practice and happy to get a game under our belt.
"I thought that our center midfielders, Amy Abner and Kim Shepela, played exceptionally well. They gave a tireless effort and were solid defensively."
Next up for the MSU women's squad is a game at Valparaiso on Friday (Sept. 4).
