NEXT MEET - Michigan State hosts the Spartan Invitational with Nebraska, Towson and Illinois-Chicago on Feb. 13 at 7 p.m. in Jenison Field House.
SERIES RECORDS - The Spartans are 2-3 versus Nebraska. The Cornhuskers defeated MSU on Jan. 15 at Iowa State, 193.725-190.225. Michigan State is also 2-3 against Towson with Towson winning the last meeting in 1998. MSU is 10-1 versus Illinois-Chicago and has won the last seven meetings in a row.
SPARTANS TAKE THIRD AT MICHIGAN CLASSIC - Michigan State placed third at the State of Michigan Classic on Saturday, Feb. 6 in Ann Arbor. No. 24 Central Michigan upset by No. 6 Michigan at 193.650-193.625. Those teams were followed by Michigan State (193.075) in third, Western Michigan (189.550) in fourth, and Eastern Michigan (189.000) in fifth. MSU also tabbed season highs on the vault (48.675), uneven bars (48.100) and balance beam (48.150). MSUs vaulting score was good enough to make the schools all-time top 20 list, checking in at No. 13. Freshman Jane McIntosh led the Spartans in three events, scoring career highs in each: she tied for second on the vault with a , placed fourth on the balance beam with a 9.875, and tied for ninth on the floor with a 9.750. Senior Carolyn Hecht won the uneven bars at 9.900 and took second in the all-around with a season-best 39.150, while junior Polly Kiker tied for second with a season-high 9.850.
SEE JANE TUMBLE - Freshman Jane McIntosh led the Spartans in three events at the Michigan Classic, scoring career highs on each event. She took second on the vault with a 9.850, placed fourth on the balance beam at 9.875 and tied for ninth on the floor with a 9.750.
AN ALL-AROUND SUCCESS - Senior Carolyn Hecht placed second in the all-around with a 39.150 at the Michigan Classic. That score ties her for 10th-best on the MSU all-time charts. She also set a season high in the vault at 9.700 and won the uneven bars with a 9.900.
MARKED IMPROVEMENT - Sophomore Lori Ruane, who did not compete on the balance beam collegiately until this season, set her career high at the Michigan Classic with a 9.700, improving from her previous best of 9.175.
IN THE RANKINGS - The Spartans are not rated in the Top 25 this week, which is based on average. As a team, Michigan State is tied for 18th in the vault (48.187). Individually, Carolyn Hecht is fifth on the balance beam at 9.844 and Elisabeth Forshier is tied for 22nd on the vault (9.787).
