EAST LANSING, Mich.- Michigan State senior forward Chris Slosar (Grand Blanc) scored three goals and added one assist in leading the Spartan men's soccer team to a 5-1 win over Valparaiso this afternoon in a game played at Old College Field on the MSU campus. The win over the Crusaders ended a six-game Spartan losing streak.
Slosar scored MSU's first two goals at 5:07 and 5:46 while junior midfielder Hal Howell (Brighton) and freshman forward Brett Konley (Plymouth) notched markers at 25:27 and 28:27 in helping the Spartans to a 4-0 halftime lead. After Valparaiso senior Bryan McCulloch cut the deficit to 4-1 at 54:22, Slosar closed out the game's scoring at 63:09 with his fifth goal of the season.
MSU finished the game with a 17-13 advantage in shot attempts and finished with six corner kicks to Valparaiso's five. Sophomore T.J. Lieckfelt (Sterling Heights) played the first half and made one save in registering the win for MSU. Senior Craig Myers (Eaton Rapids) played the final 45 minutes in goal and posted five saves.
"We changed our defensive scheme somewhat and were able to force some turnovers," said MSU Head Coach Joe Baum. "Chris Slosar gave a great effort as did the whole team. Winning this game was like lifting a weight off our back."
The win leaves MSU's overall record at 6-7. The next action for the men's team will be on Sunday (Oct. 18) when it travels to Bowling Green State for a 2:00 p.m. contest.
