EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State men's soccer team recorded its fifth straight victory on Friday evening with a strange 2-1 win overtime triumph over Cal State Northridge in the Met-Life Tourney in San Diego, Calif.
The Spartans' deciding tally came when CS Northridge's Luis Castro accidentally headed a ball over his goalkeeper's head at 92:54. MSU senior midfielder James Whitmore (Ann Arbor) opened the game's scoring at 50:45 with his second marker of the year on a penalty kick. At 56:30, CS Northridge's Mark Fitzpatrick knotted the game.
Spartan sophomore T.J. Lieckfelt (Sterling Heights) made five saves in the win while Christian Perez registered two saves for CS Northridge. Northridge enjoyed a 15-9 edge in shot attempts while each team finished with three corner kicks.
MSU's 5-1 record is the team's best six-game start since the 1996 campaign and the Spartans will look to extend their winning streak on Sunday afternoon when they battle Cal State Fullerton (a 5-2 winner over San Diego on Friday night) starting at 4:00 p.m.
