Men's Gymnastics Defeats No. 7 Illinois

EAST LANSING, Mich. - The sixth-ranked Michigan State men's gymnastics team defeated No. 7 Illinois, 226.900-225.475. It was the highest score of the year for MSU. The Spartans also hit team highs on the floor exercise (37.925), pommel horse (38.675), parallel bars (37.250) and the high bar (37.600). On the women's side, Illinois scored a convincing 193.225-191.375 victory over MSU. The Spartans' team score was its best of the year, while the team also hit highs on the uneven bars (47.750) and the floor exercise (48.600).
For the men, nearly every Spartan competitor hit a season-high on a routine, led by juniors Jeff Moomaw and Brady Grimm who each nailed four season-bests. Freshman Jonathan Plante won the pommel horse with a 9.825 while sophomore Chris Weedon took the still rings at 9.650. Moomaw tied for first on the vault (9.550) and sophomore Tommy Housley tied for top honors on the parallel bars (9.650).
On the women's side, senior Carolyn Hecht won the all-around at 39.125 while sophomore Melissa Green placed second with a career-best score of 38.625. Hecht hit for 9.925 on the bars to tie for the second-best mark on that apparatus in school history. She also scored 9.900 on the balance beam, tied for fourth-best in school history. Sophomore Toni Duce hit a career high with a 9.775 on the uneven bars while Green tied her career-best on with a 9.850 on the same event.
Michigan State's men's team is now 3-5 on the season, 2-5 in the Big Ten. The women's team falls to 4-4 on the season and 1-2 in the Big Ten. The men's team is in action next Saturday, Feb. 6 as it hosts Illinois-Chicago in the Jenison Gymnasium at 7 p.m. The women's team travels to Ann Arbor, Mich., on Feb. 6 for the Michigan Classic, scheduled to start at 4 p.m.
