EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State's two-round 280-290=570 gave the Spartans a first-place finish in the 13-team field at the Detroit Titans Invitational Monday in Jackson, Mich. MSU's opening round score of 280 was the lowest score for a Spartan team in Ken Horvath's 10 years at Michigan State.
Michigan State's team score of 570 was six-under par and 17 strokes ahead of second-place Eastern Michigan.
The Spartans, playing in their first tournament of the season, captured a team championship for the first time since taking the Persimmon Ridge Intercollegiate in 1996. Leading the way was sophomore Brent Goik (Bay City), whose first-round 66 was a career low. Goik followed that with a 74, finishing first individually at 66-74=140. It was the first individual championship of his collegiate career.
Goik received great support from senior Alberto Quevedo (Canary Islands, Spain.), who finished in second place, only three strokes behind with a 72-71=143. Senior Matt Pumford (Saginaw) and freshman Adam Walicki (Saline) shot identical 71-73=144 to tie for fourth-place honors.
"The guys obviously played good golf on a course where you can score well if you hit the ball and putt well," said assistant coach Russ Cunningham. "It is also a course similar to the one we will be playing on this weekend at the Northern Intercollegiate, so it is encouraging in that sense. The guys really continued the strong play they had shown throughout qualifying this fall."
The Spartans return to action this Friday and Saturday at the Northern Intercollegiate in Minneapolis, Minn.
