East Lansing, MI - The No. 7-ranked Penn State womens soccer team used a goal by senior forward Carole Dutchka early in the second half in topping the Michigan State womens squad, 1-0, this afternoon in a game at Old College Field on the MSU campus.
Dutchkas goal came at 46:10 from a sharp angle about 15 yards out to the left of the MSU goal. The win enabled the Nittany Lions to remain unbeaten at 8-0-1 overall. The teams battled to a 0-0 draw after the first half of play. Spartan junior goalkeeper Mara Lee (Allison Park, PA) played a big role in keeping MSU in the game, making five saves in the first half including a pair at point-blank range. Lee finished the match with 11 saves while PSU freshman Emily Oleksiuk registered five stops.
Our team battled and played with a lot of heart today, said MSU head coach Tom Saxton. We had some chances late in the game but couldnt finish them. Penn State is a good team and Im proud of the way we hung in with them.
PSU finished the game with a 26-9 advantage in shot attempts and had seven corner kicks to the Spartans' one. The setback was MSUs fifth straight by one goal.
The Spartans now own a 2-5-1 overall slate, 0-4 in the Big Ten. MSUs next action will take place next Friday (Oct. 2) at home against Minnesota starting at 3:00 p.m.
