Freshmen Lead Field Hockey To Win In Season Opener

MT. PLEASANT, Mich. - The Michigan State field hockey team opened its 1998 season with a 2-1 victory over Central Michigan tonight in Mt. Pleasant. Freshmen forwards Jessica Wheeler and Sanne van Nouhuys tallied goals in the first half to lift MSU to the win.
The Chippewas got on the board first when Cheryl Eglin took a pass from Kari Labeta and beat goalie Amy Ortwein just two minutes and 48 seconds into the game.
With just under 20 minutes to play in the first half, Wheeler (San Dieog, Calif.) beat CMU goalie Carole Ewert to tie the game. Van Nouhuys, a native of Bilthoven, Netherlands, scored the game-winner with 3:50 remaining in the half.
Ortwein, a sophomore from Hershey, Pa., made the first start of her career. She made 10 saves in the contest, including seven in the second half to preserve the victory. Senior defender Melissa Pryor (Ann Arbor) helped keep the Chippewas in check with a pair of defensive saves, while sophomore midfielder Adrienne Miroslaw (Dallas, Pa.) also added a defensive stop.
The Spartans will travel to St. Louis, Mo., this weekend for the Big Ten/ACC Challenge. MSU will play host St. Louis on Saturday at 5 p.m., and will take on sixth-ranked Maryland on Monday, Sept. 7 at 2 p.m. The Spartans first home game is Saturday, Sept. 26 against Louisville at 1 p.m. at Spartan Stadium.
