Field Hockey Falls To No. 6 Maryland

St. Louis, Mo. - The Michigan State field hockey team dropped a 4-1 decision to sixth-ranked Maryland today at the Big Ten/ACC Challenge in St. Louis, Mo. The Spartans fall to 2-1 overall with the loss, while the Terps improve to 3-0.
Maryland scored two goals in the first half and went up 3-0 when Carla Tagliente scored on a penalty stroke with just under 30 minutes remaining in the game. MSU freshman Marleen Tuip recorded her fourth goal of the weekend to cut the Terps lead to 3-1, but Maryland answered with a goal just minutes later to ice the victory.
Sophomore Amy Ortwein made 11 saves in the contest for the Spartans, while Nicole Catanzaro and Melissa Pryor chipped in with two defensive saves each.
The Spartans will face Stanford in Mt. Pleasant on Wednesday, before heading to Philadelphia, Pa., for the Temple Invitational, Sept. 12-13. MSU's first home game is Saturday, Sept. 26 against Louisville at 1 p.m. at Spartan Stadium.
