EAST LANSING, Mich. -
Michigan State crew's varsity 8 boat overcame difficult conditions to finish second in the finals of the Midwest Sprints Saturday in Madison, Wis. The Spartans crossed the line about eight seconds behind champion Michigan, 6:35.14 to 6:43.41, and over a second ahead of third-place Ohio State (6:44.51). Those three boats all unseated host Wisconsin, which had won the Midwest Sprints each of its 25 years of existence.
Every Spartan boat finished in the top four, as head coach Bebe Bryans also received strong results from the junior varsity 8 (4th), the varsity 4 (4th), the first novice 8 (3rd) and the second novice 8 (2nd).
"For the entire team in was a tremendous effort," Bryans said. "The novices medaled in both boats and for the varsity 8 to finish second was really exceptional. My goal for them was to be within 10 seconds of Michigan, which is one of the fastest boats in the nation, and they did that. They did what they needed to do to stay in contention for an NCAA berth."
The Spartan varsity 8 boat now has a 4-0 record in dual races and has finished first or second in each of the four multi-school regattas it has entered this spring. Saturday, the boat overcame rough and windy conditions on Lake Wingra.
Michigan State returns to action this Saturday, May 2, in Ann Arbor, Mich. The Spartans face Kansas State in the morning and Michigan in the afternoon.
