16 Wrestlers Still Alive At MSU Open

EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State wrestling team advanced 16 wrestlers in the MSU Open Saturday at Jenison Fieldhouse. The Spartans will have nine wrestlers competing in the semi-final round of the championship bracket Sunday morning, with seven more individuals set to wrestle in the consolation bracket quarterfinals. No team scores are being kept.
Junior Mike Castillo won two matches at 141 pounds to move on to the semis, while freshman Karl Nadolsky won three matches to get to the semi-finals at 149. Junior Corey Posey also won three matches Saturday, advancing to the 157 pound semi-finals, and freshman Gray Maynard got three victories to become a 165-pound semi-finalist. At 174 pounds, senior Greg DeGrand made it to the semis with three wins, and senior Will Hill and freshman Scott Owen each made the semi-finals with three wins at 184. Seniors Nick Muzashvili and Matt Lamb closed the day on a positive note for Michigan State, getting two wins to make the semis at 197 and heavyweight, respectively.
Also remaining in the draw as consolation quarterfinalists for the Spartans are: sophomore Chris Williams (125), freshman Charles Sageman (141), sophomore Kevin Speiss and freshmen John Wechter and Nathaniel Mesyn (174), and junior James Brimm and sophomore Gabe Zientek (184).
Wrestling will resume at 10 a.m. Sunday with the championship semi-final and consolation quater-final rounds. The championship and consolation finals are slated for 1 p.m.
