East Lansing, Mich. - The fourth-seeded Northwestern Wildcats defeated the fifth-seeded Wisconsin Badgers, 2-0, Friday afternoon in the first round of the Big Ten Men's Soccer Championship at Old College Field on the Michigan State University campus.
Junior Jun Kim got the Wildcats off to an early 1-0 lead during the seventh minute of play after blasting a kick past Badger goalkeeper Moriba Baker. Freshman Doug Gibson had the assist for Northwestern.
The Wildcats scored again just 14 seconds before halftime on a goal by senior David Mooradian, who snuck a shot into the top of the net on a pass by senior Trevor Nelson.
In the second half, Northwestern continued to shut down Wisconsin's offensive attack. Senior goalie Matt Keeler recorded nine saves en route to his fourth complete shutout on the season. Baker had four stops for the Badgers.
?I am very proud of our players,? said Northwestern Head Coach Michael Kunert. ?It is the first time in Northwestern history that we have advanced to the semifinals of the tournament, and we our looking forward to facing the challenge playing top-seeded Indiana. Tomorrow will be tough, but I know our players will be ready.?
Northwestern has won four games in a row to improve its record to 6-13. The Wildcats advance to the semifinals of the Big Ten Championship tomorrow to face top-seeded Indiana at 12:00 p.m. Wisconsin completes its season with a 6-13-1 record.
