Women's Golf Takes Fifth At Lady Buckeye Fall Invitational

EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State?s women?s golf team shot a final-round 313 on Sunday to finish at 303-316-313=932, good for a fifth-place finish among 12 teams at the Lady Buckeye Invitational in Columbus, Ohio. The Spartans finished just 13 strokes behind champion Purdue in a tournament which featured eight teams which made the NCAA Championship last spring.
Sophomore Emily Bastel (Upper Sandusky, Ohio) continued to lead the Spartans, as she earned a share of fourth place with a three-round 73-76-77=226 at the par-72 OSU Scarlet Course. Bastel, who has been the top Spartan in all three tournaments this fall, was just two strokes behind medalist Brittany Straza of Florida (224).
Joining Bastel in the top 10 was classmate Stacy Snider (Grand Rapids, Mich.), who finished five strokes off the lead in 10th place. Snider shot a 79 on Sunday to finish in 74-76-79=229.
The Spartans, who led the tournament after the first round and were in fourth place after the second, enjoyed success without junior star Kasey Gant (Fort Wayne, Ind.), who remains sidelined with soreness in her right shoulder. The MSU lineup features two sophomores (Bastel and Snider) and three freshmen (red-shirt Shellie Morton and true freshmen Jessica Till and Erin Roe).
The Spartans were just one stroke behind fourth-place Louisiana State and five strokes behind third-place Ohio State. Both of those schools were among the top 19 teams in the nation last year which reached the NCAA Finals.
Among the teams Michigan State finished ahead of were Furman and Florida State, two teams which reached the NCAA Finals a year ago, and two other schools which reached the NCAA Regionals. Michigan State fell just three strokes shy of qualifying for the NCAA Finals at the NCAA East Regional last spring.
Michigan State?s next action is Monday and Tuesday, Oct. 11-12, in the Big Ten/Big 12 Shootout in Muncie, Ind.
