LAST WEEK?S RESULTS: W-Valparaiso, 3-1, L-No. 9 Penn State, 1-0 (OT)
THIS WEEK: Oct. 27, Western Michigan, 3:00 p.m., Oct. 31, at Wisconsin, 1:00 p.m.
HEARTBREAKER: Michigan State lost to No. 9 Penn State (13-2, 3-2 Big Ten) 1-0 in sudden-death overtime on Sunday to snap its four-game winning streak. MSU had a chance to win in overtime on a breakaway, but the shot rattled off the top of the goalpost. Despite the heartbreaking loss, Head Coach Joe Baum was pleased with his team?s effort, and said it was one of the finest college soccer games he has ever seen at Old College Field. The Spartans look to match the intensity displayed against the Nittany Lions on Wednesday, as they host the Broncos of Western Michigan.
TAMING THE BRONCOS: Michigan State hosts Western Michigan (1-11-3, 0-3-2 MAC) in a mid-week matchup Wednesday at Old College Field. Throughout the series history, the Broncos have lacked any kick against Michigan State. The Spartans lead the all-time series, 15-2-7, and defeated Western Michigan last year in Kalamazoo, 5-0. Western has not beat MSU since the 1993 season.
HALLOWEEN MADNESS: The MSU men?s soccer team will have to miss trick-or-treating this year as they play at Madison, Wis. on Oct. 31 against the Wisconsin Badgers. The Badgers are 4-11-1 on the season, and are winless in Big Ten play. The Spartans have struggled in the overall series, with Wisconsin leading 14-4-3. MSU lost to the Badgers last season at home, 2-0.
RANKING UPDATE: Michigan State maintained their 10th-ranked position in this week?s NSCAA/Adidas College Soccer Polls. This season, MSU has defeated two regionally-ranked teams (Midwest No. 3 Ohio State and No. 5 Oakland), while losing to top-ranked Indiana (Midwest) and Penn State (Mid-Atlantic).
