Women's Cross Country Captures Auburn Invitational

EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State women?s cross country team captured first place at the Auburn Invitational with two top 10 finishers at the Indian Pines Golf Course in Auburn, Ala., Friday, Oct. 1. The Spartans finished first with 73 points, beating 17th ranked North Carolina in the Finish Lynx National Poll. North Carolina finished second with 80 points.

Michigan State sophomore and co-captain Ann Somerville (Ironwood, Mich.) led the Spartans with a fifth-place finish with a time of 17:09.42. Michigan State freshman Cindy Durocher (Parry Sound, Ontario) placed sixth with a time of 17:10.54. Other top finishers for the Spartans were MSU seniors Jen Denkins (Flushing, Mich.), Sarah Parbel (Caledonia, Mich.) and co-captain Leah Nilsson (Williamston, Mich.), who finished 16th, 25th and 26th, respectively. Michigan State?s next meet is Oct. 16, at the Pre-NCAA meet in Bloomington, Ind., at 11 a.m.
