Volleyball Drops Match To No. 20 Wisconsin

MADISON, Wis. - Michigan State fell to 1-3 in the Big Ten and 11-5 overall with a 0-3 loss to No. 20 Wisconsin in Madison on Saturday, Oct. 2. The Badgers won their 10th match of the season in decisive fashion, 15-5, 15-13, 15-4.
Wisconsin's Kelly Kennedy led all players with a match-high 6 kills as Wisconsin outhit MSU .303-.165. Erin Hartley tallied 11 kills and six digs for State while Sarah Gustin added 10 kills and six digs. Angela Morley hit seven kills and notched a match-high six blocks while Tammy Vonderheide led MSU with 10 digs.
In game one Wisconsin jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead. MSU countered with three straight points before the Badgers scored the next nine in a row and cruised to a 15-5 win. Sherisa Livingston, Kelly Kennedy and Jenny Maastricht all had five kills in the game for Wisconsin, which outhit State .424-.95. Gustin led the Spartans with five kills in game one, while Jessica Sanborn, Hartley and Morley each added three.
Michigan State jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead in game two but Wisconsin got back into its offensive flow, tying the score at 4-4. The Score was tied seven more times after that with the Badgers leading at 5-4 and 6-5. MSU was up 13-12 before the teams traded 11 sideouts. A kill by Wisconsin tied the score at 13-13 and an MSU timeout could not slow Wisconsin down as it went on to win 15-13. The Badgers outhit State .258-.172.
The Spartans were completely out of synch in the third game and Wisconsin took advantage, racing to a 12-0 lead before block assists by Morley and Gustin put the Spartans on the board. MSU managed to score three more points before the Badgers closed out the game and the match, 15-4.
MSU returns to action on Friday, Oct. 8 in East Lansing against Iowa, and on Saturday against Minnesota. The Spartans-Gophers match will be televised by espn2 for a tape-delayed broadcast on Oct. 13 at 1 p.m.
