Volleyball Visits Purdue, No. 20 Wisconsin

? PURDUE: Purdue is 8-3 on the season, 0-2 in Big Ten play. The Boilermakers traveled to Iowa and Minnesota last weekend to open their Big Ten slate. Iowa defeated Purde, 3-1 (15-11, 15-7, 9-15, 15-13), while Minnesota won in three (15-8, 15-5, 15-13). The losses snapped a six-match winning streak for Purdue. Michigan State has won the last 11 matches in a row against Purdue.
The Boilers are led by Aneska Arosarena and Julie Doud, who are averaging 4.83 and 4.34 kills per game, respectively. Setter Taryn Catlin averages 13.51 assists per game, while Arosarena is the team?s leading digger at 2.88 per game. Connie Paul is averaging 1.07 blocks per gam. Purdue leads the series 31-17. MSU won the last match 15-7, 15-6, 17-15 in West Lafayette on Nov. 12, 1998.
? WISCONSIN: The 20th-ranked Badgers are 8-4 overall, 1-1 in the Big Ten. Last weekend, Wisconsin lost to Minnesota (16-14, 9-15, 7-15, 9-15) and defeated Iowa (3-15, 15-0, 16-14, 15-13). Michigan State is 4-6 in its last 10 matches against the Badgers.
Jenny Maastricht leads the team with 3.50 kills and 1.31 blocks per game. The Badgers have two active setters, Morgan shields averages 10.07 assists and Lizzy Fitzgerald 7.88 assists per game. Erin Byrd leads Wisconsin at 2.46 digs per game. The Badgers lead the nation in service aces per game at 3.86. Wisconsin leads the series 26-15. Wisconsin won the last meeting 15-11, 15-12, 12-15, 15-11 in Madison on Nov. 27, 1998.
? MULTI-MEDIA: Fox Sports Chicago will air the Oct. 2 match between MSU and Wisconsin on a tape delay basis. The match will air on Oct. 3 at 4 p.m. Both the Purdue and Wisconsin match will be aired on the radio by 730-AM WVFN. Jason Colthorp has the play-by-play, while former Spartan Veronica Morales provides color.
? SET BACK: Junior setter Christie Landry was lost for the season with a torn right ACL in MSU?s 3-1 victory over Ohio State on Sept. 25. Taking her place will be junior Vicki Basil, who started for MSU in 1997 and currently stands eighth on the MSU all-time assists chart with 1,421.
? MORELY, NOT LESSLY: Middle Angela Morley tied her career high with nine blocks (1-8) against Ohio State on Sept. 25. Against Penn State on Sept. 25, she had seven blocks (2-5). She is currently leading the Big Ten at 1.38 blocks per game.
? GUSTIN?s BUSTIN? ?EM: Outside hitter Sarah Gustin set a career high with 23 kills against Penn State to lead all Spartan hitters. She also added 11 digs for her second double-double of the season. Gustin moved into seventh place on the MSU career block assists list with nine block assists against OSU and PSU combined. She now has 230 in her career, just 18 shy of sixth place. Gustin marked another career milestone with her 500th career kill against Penn State. She now has 520.
? SMALL LOSS, BIG GAIN: The Spartans took No. 2 Penn State to five games on Sept. 24, eventually losing 15-10, 3-15, 5-15, 15-11, 8-15. It marked the first time since a 1-3 loss on Nov. 9, 1996 that MSU had played more than three games against the Nittany Lions.
? CRUSHED NUTS: Michigan State beat its first ranked opponent of the year with a 3-1 victory over Ohio State on Sept. 25, 8-15, 15-6, 15-10, 15-5. It was the third straight win for MSU over the Buckeyes. ? NATIONAL PRIDE: Jessica Sanborn was second in the nation in hitting percentage last week at .461. After last weekend, she is hitting .417.
? TAMMY DIGS IT: Outside hitter Tammy Vonderheide has seen most of her action as a backrow specialist in 1999. Against Penn State on Sept. 24, Vonderheide set her career high with 18 digs as one of four Spartans in double figures. She is third on the team with a 2.33 per game average.
? HOVERING: Michigan State is hitting .292 as a team this season. The Spartans hit .326 against Ohio State on Sept. 25, the 11th time MSU has hit over .300 this season. Michigan State hit over .300 only seven times in 1998.
? ABOVE THE NET: Michigan State is outblocking its opponents 138-88 (2.8-1.8 pg) in 1999. MSU is also holding its opponents to a .170 hitting percentage.
? ON THE AIR: All of Michigan State?s home matches will be televised live by AT&T Cable Services (Channel 13/17). MSU will also have two network matches, both aired on a tape-delay basis: Fox Sports Chicago will air the Oct. 2 match (MSU at Wisconsin) on Oct. 3 at 4 p.m., while espn2 (Oct. 9 vs. Minnesota) which will air MSU?s home match with Minnesota (Oct. 9) on Oct. 13 at 1 p.m. Eight of State?s matches will also be broadcast on the radio by 730-AM WVFN (Sept. 24, Sept. 25, Oct. 1, Oct. 2, Oct. 8, Oct. 9, Oct. 13 and Nov. 24).
