Chad Kurmel was named assistant coach for the Michigan State men's golf program in July 2022.

Kurmel had been a volunteer assistant coach for the program the previous four years, beginning in 2018-19, while serving as the director of instruction at the Spartan Golf Academy.

Since his arrival at Michigan State, the Spartans have earned five appearances to an NCAA Regional and posted three top-three finishes in the Big Ten Championships. MSU has won at least one tournament in four of the last five seasons and nine players have earned All-Big Ten honors.

Kurmel has been a PGA Professional for more than 25 years and was named "Best In-State" instructor by Golf Digest from 2019-22.

In addition to his experience as a junior and collegiate golfer, Kurmel has experience on professional tours. Kurmel played in the PGA TOUR's 2007 Honda Classic and 2013 Puerto Rico Open, the Korn Ferry Tour's Miccosukee Championship and in the PGA Professional National Championships seven times (2004, 2009, 2013, 2015, 2017, 2021 and 2022). He won the South Florida PGA Section Championship in 2012.

Most recently, Kurmel won the Michigan Senior PGA Professional Championship in August 2024 to advance to the National Senior PGA Professional Championship for the third-straight year.

Kurmel graduated from Southeastern Louisiana University in 1993, earning his degree in business management.
