Doug Wojcik, a veteran college basketball coach with more than 30 years of experience, enters his ninth year in East Lansing and his third season (fourth overall) as associate head coach.
In his second stint at Michigan State, Wojcik has been part of Head Coach Tom Izzo’s staff for 11 years. His initial start at MSU was from 2003-05, as an assistant coach and then as associate head coach in his second season (2004-05).
In the last eight seasons, Michigan State has won three Big Ten regular season titles (2019, 2020, 2025), the 2019 Big Ten Tournament Championship, advanced to the 2019 NCAA Final Four, the 2025 NCAA Elite Eight and a pair of NCAA Sweet Sixteen appearances (2023, 2026). The Spartans have also extended their consecutive NCAA Tournament streak to 28 years, officially recognized by the NCAA as the nation’s longest active streak. During that time, 15 Spartans have earned All-Big Ten honors. In the 2024-25 season, Wojcik was named the Big Ten Conference Howard Moore Assistant Coach of the Year, while Tom Izzo became the Big Ten all-time leader in conference wins.
As the associate head coach for three seasons overall, Michigan State has had extraordinary success. In the 2004-05 season, the Spartans advanced to the 2005 Final Four by being the only team in college basketball history to beat Duke and Kentucky in the same weekend to advance. During the last two seasons, Michigan State has a combined 57-15 overall record, including a 32-8 Big Ten record with a first place and second-place finish in the Big Ten regular season. The Spartans have also advanced to the 2025 Elite Eight and the 2026 Sweet Sixteen of the NCAA Tournament.
As a recruiter, Wojcik has continued to show his ability to bring talent to East Lansing. He has personally recruited two McDonald’s All-Americans to be Spartans, Max Christie (2021) and Jasiah Jervis (2026). Overall, Wojcik has helped recruit and sign 10 McDonald’s All-Americans in his career. In addition, he has signed and/or coached 27 NBA players, helping develop 11 first round draft picks.
As the MSU defensive coordinator, the Spartans have been an exceptional defensive team in the Big Ten as well as nationally. In the last three seasons, Michigan State’s defense has been ranked ninth, fourth and 10th in the country, averaging out to be a top-10 defensive team.
In Wojcik’s nine years as a Division I head coach, he has a career record of 178-121 (.595) during stints at Tulsa (2005-12) and the College of Charleston (2012-14), leading four teams into postseason play, averaging 20 wins per season overall, winning more than 60 percent of his conference games (88-58, .602), reaching three conference championship games and transitioning both programs to higher-ranked conferences.
During his seven seasons at Tulsa, Wojcik posted four consecutive 20-win seasons, including back-to-back 25-win seasons, advanced to consecutive Conference USA Tournament championship games in 2008 and 2009, won the inaugural College Basketball Invitational (CBI) title in 2008 and received two NIT at-large bids in 2009 and 2010. He is the all-time winningest head coach in Tulsa history with 140 victories.
Following his tenure at Tulsa, Wojcik served as head coach at the College of Charleston for two seasons. He led his initial team to 24 wins, the Southern Conference tournament championship game, an appearance in the CBI and a two-year overall record of 38-29.
Wojcik has spent 23 years as a Division I assistant coach, with stints at the U.S. Naval Academy, Notre Dame, North Carolina, Michigan State, Gonzaga and East Carolina, helping 14 teams reach the NCAA Tournament, including two Final Four appearances and five Sweet 16 appearances, along with 11 conference championships.
Wojcik began his coaching career in 1992-93 as an assistant at his alma mater, the United States Naval Academy. During his seven years in Annapolis, Navy won the Patriot League four times and advanced to the NCAA Tournament in 1994, 1997 and 1998.
As a player, Wojcik was a three-year starter and team captain at Navy. He helped lead the Mids to three consecutive conference championships and NCAA Tournament appearances, including an Elite Eight trip in 1986, with a combined record of 82-17 during that span. He was an all-conference player who was named to the Colonial Athletic Association’s Silver Anniversary Team. A Navy Athletics Hall of Fame inductee, Wojcik still ranks as the all-time leader in assists (714, 7.21 per game) and scored a career-high 18 points and had eight assists during the team’s 1985 NCAA Tournament win over LSU, Navy’s first NCAA Tournament win in 26 years.
A 1987 graduate with a bachelor’s degree in physical science, Wojcik was commissioned as a Naval Officer and attended Surface Warfare Officer School in Newport, R.I. He was assigned to the USS W.S. Sims out of Mayport, Fla., where he served as First Division Deck Officer and then Engineering Boilers Officer.
A native of Wheeling, W.Va., Wojcik played high school basketball for legendary Xavier and Wake Forest head coach Skip Prosser. Wojcik and his wife, Lael, have two sons, Paxson and Denham. Paxson played and graduated from Brown University in 2023, where he was the team captain and earned All-Ivy League honors. He finished his college career at the University of North Carolina as a graduate transfer, helping the Tar Heels win the 2024 Atlantic Coast Conference regular season title and reach the Sweet Sixteen of the NCAA Tournament before playing professionally for one season in Poland. Denham played and graduated from Harvard University in 2025, where he was a team captain. He completed his college career as a graduate transfer at Michigan State, helping the Spartans to a 2026 second-place Big Ten regular season finish and the NCAA Tournament Sweet Sixteen.
