Erin Shanahan joined Michigan State's field hockey program as an assistant coach in June 2021, and departed after the 2024 fall season.   Â
Shanahan was a four-year letterwinner at the University of Virginia and graduated in 2020. She spent a postgraduate year in England, playing in the club system while pursuing a master's degree.
As a senior at Virginia in 2019, Shanahan captained the team to an 18-5 record as the Cavaliers reached the semifinals of the NCAA Tournament. She played in four NCAA Tournaments during her career, was part of the 2016 Atlantic Coast Conference Championship squad and was twice named to the All-ACC Academic Team. She appeared in 86 games in her career (51 starts), finished with 19 goals and 12 assists for 50 points and was named to the National Field Hockey Coaches Association Senior Game roster in 2019.
Shanahan was named to the 2019 U.S. Women's Development Squad and traveled to the Netherlands, competing against Scotland's National Team and Belgium's U-21 Team. In addition, she competed at the USA Field Hockey Young Women's National Championship.
Shanahan earned her bachelor's degrees in political science and religious studies from UVA in 2020 and spent 2021 at Nottingham Trent University in England, where she worked on a master's degree in education while playing hockey in the club system.
Off the field, Shanahan has extensive experience coaching at the youth level. She coached various age levels for the Gaels Field Hockey Club from 2014-18, spent two years (2017-19) as a USA Field Hockey Futures Coach and was a coach for Focus Field Hockey (2018-20) in Portsmouth, Va. In addition, she served as a camp coach at the University of Virginia (2017-19) and at Severna Park High School in Maryland.
