WINNER: Katlyn Roggensack (Gymnastics)
Blending athletics and academics is never an easy task, but it's even more remarkable when a student-athlete also finds time to excel in the community and be a leader among all of the varsity sports on campus. A four-year letterwinner on the gymnastics team, Katlyn Roggensack was one of the most active participants in the Student-Athlete Support Services (SASS) program in addition to serving as the president of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC). The 2009 team MVP, Roggensack closed the season ranked eighth in the Big Ten on vault and recorded 11 top-three marks, including four first-place finishes. As president of SAAC, Roggensack represented Michigan State at the NCAA National Leadership Conference, attended the Big Ten SAAC meetings, and sat on the board of the University Athletic Council. She was one of the key members of the Children's Miracle Network fund-raising committee and also the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk, including serving as team captain in 2008. In the classroom, Roggensack was a three-time Academic All-Big Ten selection and a four-time National Association of Collegiate Gymnastics Coaches (NACGC) Academic All-American. |
