The Michigan State volleyball team traveled to Evanston, Ill., Friday night to face the Northwestern Wildcats in Big Ten conference action. Despite a solid effort by MSU, the Wildcats took the 3-0 victory. With the loss, State fell to 12-15, 5-12 in conference action, while NU improved to 17-10, 8-9 in the Big Ten. Ashley Schatzle, Katie Johnson and Megan Wallin paced the Spartan offense with 15, 14 and 10 kills, respectively, while libero Nicole Colaluca tallied a floor-high 19 digs in the loss.
Game one saw Northwestern take an early 5-2 lead before a Megan Wallin block solo tied the contest at 6-6. Momentum would swing the way of the Spartans, as they would score four straight to take the 10-6 advantage. Strong play at the net by MSU would see the lead extend to 16-13 after a Davis set and Wallin kill. A Wildcat timeout would follow with hopes of halting the Spartan momentum. Taking five of the next seven points, NU would tie the contest at 18-18 forcing MSU head coach Cathy George to take her first timeout of game one. A Miken Trogdon ace would equal the score at 23-23, followed by a point-for-point battle before NU would take the 33-31 win in extra points. Out-blocked 7.0 to 4.0 during the opening set, MSU held the slight 21 to 20 kill advantage in the loss. Johnson led the way with eight kills during the first, while Schatzle added six for the Green and White.
MSU would take its first lead at the 11-10 mark behind a Wallin kill in the early points of game two. An ace by NU's Lindsay Anderson would force MSU to take its first timeout of the second game, with the Wildcats leading 14-12. State would score two consecutive points before the Northwestern offense would answer with five straight to extend its advantage to 17-14. Down 15-20, George would take her second timeout of the set. Answering the NU streak with two consecutive Hohl and Langston block assists wasn't enough, as the home team would prove strong late in the match holding for the 30-21 win and 2-0 match advantage.
Through two games, pacing the Spartan offense was the duo of Johnson and Schatzle, each with 11 kills, while Davis added 28 assists. Jessica Hohl, Brooke Langston and Wallin each managed three block assists, while Colaluca tallied 13 digs heading into game three. Northwestern held a .225 hitting percentage against the .192 for the Spartans during the first two games, as NU led State by a 10.5 to 7.0 block advantage.
State jumped to an early lead behind a Langston kill at the 10-7 mark of game three. The Spartan lead extended to 16-14 when George would take her first timeout of the set. A Langston kill and NU hitting error would follow; however, the Wildcats would near the lead at the 19-17 mark. NU would rally to tie the contest at 23-23 before a Hohl kill gave the Spartans the 24-23 edge. The teams would match points until two consecutive aces by Anderson would give the Wildcats the 31-29 win. Schatzle led the Spartan offense for the third consecutive match with 15 kills, while Johnson and Wallin would add 14 and 10, respectively.
Northwestern hit .228 for the match, compared to a .208 mark by the Spartans at the net. Colaluca tallied a floor-best 19 digs, while freshman Melany Rarey added 10 digs for the State defense. MSU held the 56 to 49 dig advantage, while the NU defense out-blocked State by a 13.5 to 7.0 margin.
