East Lansing, Mich. – No. 3/4 Michigan State played to a 0-0 draw with visiting Eastern Michigan on Thursday night at DeMartin Stadium.

The Spartans (3-0-1) held a statistical advantage in most categories – MSU outshot the Eagles 22-0, and had seven shots on goal – both season bests. The Spartans had 15 corner kick opportunities compared to just one for EMU, which came in the first half. Eastern did have a sizeable advantage with 14 fouls, while MSU committed a season-low six.

MSU had entered the game as one of just 30 teams across Division I soccer without a loss or tie through the first two weeks of the season. The Spartans certainly had some good looks – Bella Najera had a shot carom off the crossbar in the first half, and Shelby Vaughn hit the post with under 10 seconds remaining. EMU keeper Ella Holland also had a large part of keeping MSU off the board, notably with a big save on an Emerson Sargeant restart that she punched over the crossbar with just under nine minutes remaining in the first half. EMU is now 1-1-1 on the year.

Both teams went deep into their bench. Seventeen Spartans played 15 minutes or more, with none playing more than 80. Meanwhile, five field players for the Eagles went 85 or more.

Notables

Michigan State has three shutouts on its ledger this season, with its only two goals allowed on the year coming last Sunday at No. 7/8 North Carolina. The Spartans are 2-0-1 at home.
Overall on the year, the Spartans have outshot their opponents 66-32, with a 22-12 edge in shots on goal. MSU also has 35 corners in four games compared to 15 for its opponents.
Fifth-year keeper Bella Schopp made her first appearance in a Spartan kit, and was not forced to face a shot in 90 minutes. .
Sophomore Mackenzie Kruer made her first collegiate start and played a team-high 80 minutes. Kayla Briggs played 79.
MSU liberally went to its bench throughout the game, with 20 players seeing the field and 16 playing 20+ minutes. EMU played 22 field players.

UP NEXT
The Spartan women hosted the first game of a men's-women's doubleheader on Thursday, and the men followed with a game against SIUE. The teams will once again play a doubleheader on Sunday; the women open the day's action against No. 12/7 Colorado in a rematch of last year's NCAA Sweet 16 battle here in East Lansing. Game time is 11 am and it will air live on the Big Ten Network. The men will take on Niagara at 2 pm.
