Seymour smacks team-leading third HR of season in first inning.
LINCOLN, Neb. -- Michigan State baseball was beaten by Nebraska on Sunday afternoon at Hawks Field at Haymarket Park in the final game of the three-game Big Ten Conference opening series to open league play.
For the second game in a row, the Spartans were the first team to score, as senior infielder Randy Seymour smacked an opposite-field solo home run to right in the top of the first. It was Seymour's team-leading third HR of the season and gave MSU an early 1-0 lead.
The Huskers quickly countered with five runs in the first, adding two more in the second, one each in the third and fourth frames and two in the fifth to open an 11-1 lead. Michigan State plated a run in the top of the sixth, as freshman infielder CJ Deckinga led off with a double to left, moved up to third on a balk, and scored on an RBI groundout by sophomore outfielder Khamaree Thomas to cut the gap to 11-2. Nebraska added a run in the bottom of the sixth to regain the 10-run lead at 12-2. Down to its last at bat to extend the game, MSU got a one-out pinch from sophomore Dayton Murphy, but nothing else and the game ended at 12-2 via the run-rule.
