EAST LANSING, Mich. – Michigan State men's basketball redshirt sophomore guard Jeremy Fears Jr. was named a Second Team All-American by the Associated Press, announced on Tuesday afternoon.
The recognition from the Associated Press plays a factor for the official consensus NCAA team.
This is the second All-American honor for Fears, who was a third team selection by The Sporting News last month.
Fears earned All-Big Ten Conference First Team honors from the league's coaches and media last week and was selected to the Great Lakes District team by the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) on Wednesday.
One of the team's captains, Fears leads Michigan State in scoring with 15.7 points per game (No. 18 in the Big Ten Conference) and in assists, with 9.2 per game, which not only ranks first in the Big Ten but is No. 1 in the country. He ranks third in the Big Ten in free throw percentage (89.3%) and second in assist-to-turnover ratio (4.13).
He is the only player in the country averaging at least 15.0 points and 9.0 assists per game.
Nationally, Fears leads the country in assists per game (9.2), is second in total assists (294), fourth in assist-to-turnover ratio (4.08) and ranks No. 29 in free throw percentage (89.0%).
He handed out 13 assists in the Big Ten Tournament against UCLA, breaking the Michigan State school record of 291 set by Cassius Winston in 2018-19.
Fears becomes Michigan State's first Associated Press All-American since Cassius Winston earned second team honors in 2019-20. He is the 26th player in program history to earn an All-American honor and the 10th player to be named an All-American under Head Coach Tom Izzo.
Michigan State, the No. 3 seed in the East Region of the 2026 NCAA Tournament, plays No. 14 seed North Dakota State on Thursday, March 19 at KeyBank Center in Buffalo. The game airs on TNT (4:05 p.m.), with Brian Anderson, Jim Jackson and Allie LaForce calling the game.
