EAST LANSING, Mich. -- Former Michigan State baseball player Indigo Diaz is playing for Team Canada in the World Baseball Classic.
Diaz helped Canada to a 3-1 record in Pool A, winning the group and advancing to the quarterfinals for the first time in WBC history. He saw one inning of work in Canada's 8-2 win over Columbia in its opening game, and also saw action in Wednesday's 7-2 win over Cuba.
Team Canada will face Team USA in the quarterfinals on Friday, March 13 at 8 p.m. ET at Daikin Park in Houston, Texas and will be aired on FOX.Â
A native of Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, Diaz also played for Team Canada in the 2023 WBC.Â
Diaz was selected in the 27th-round of the 2019 draft by the Atlanta Braves. He spent two seasons in the Braves organization, before being traded to the New York Yankees prior to the 2023 season. After three seasons in the Yankees system, mostly with their AA-affiliate, the Somerset Patriots, Diaz signed a free agent deal with the Arizona Diamondback in December, 2025.Â
In his one season at Michigan State in 2019, Diaz led MSU and ranked tied for eighth in the Big Ten regular-season statistics with seven saves. The seven saves is also tied for ninth on the Spartans' single-season saves list. He recorded 51 strikeouts in 44.0 IP, after converting to MSU's closer part-way through the season after making four starts. Diaz finished with 25 appearances, ranking tied for 13th in the B1G during the season. He also ranked tied for 11th in B1G only action with two league saves.
In his last 20 appearances as a Spartan, Diaz fired 31 strikeouts, including four that ended games and sealed victories for MSU, highlighted by the third of striking out the side in the ninth inning on April 9 at Notre Dame.
Diaz collected his seven saves in a span of 16 appearances, along with earning two wins and was part of two combined shutouts. Diaz did not allow a run of any kind in 16 of his 21 total relief appearances, including a stretch of 13 in a row.
