Michigan State Head Coach Robyn Fralick
Opening Statement...
They played a really good game. They have a new coach, and so it was good for us because we had no idea what they were going to do. So, we had to be able to guard and figure it out while we were playing, and they ran a lot of five-out motion screening and shot a lot of 3s and did not dribble much. I thought it really challenged us to guard multiple screening actions, guarding through the shot clock, and our fours and fives guarding in space. Clearly, we have to get better, we gave up too many shots that they wanted. We must do a better job of taking away the arc with a team like that. But I love that for us because it is something that we have not seen much of and it is something that we have not worked much on. It gave us some good feedback and some film to learn from. Coach Cam (Kim Cameron) said earlier in the locker room that it is such an exciting day for so many of our kids; it is their first time in a Michigan State uniform. That is their first time stepping inside the Breslin Center and getting a chance to compete and play. One thing I am really eager about with this group is I believe we will continue to get better as the season goes because there are just so many things that we can do better and so many things that we can learn. They have the willingness to do it.
Thoughts on leadership from returners and cohesion between lots of new players...
Well, what I have loved about this group so far is that this has been a real low ego group. I mean that, I do not mean low ego, low confidence, I mean low ego, let's figure it out, how do we help the team. You can do that in a lot of different ways, and we do have a lot of new kids, and they are very much still learning to play together.Monique (Bobongie), Kathy (Otto), and Emma (Broliron) also did not get here until school started because they were playing with their national teams and club teams. Part of it is really fun, you have so many different types of teams and seasons, and this team is very fun because there are just so many things that we are going to figure out together. One thing I have really loved about this team is that we have a high IQ team. The more we play together, we are a good passing team, a willing passing team, and a team that has a feel. I do think that we have that in a lot of spots which has led to that. I did not think we shot the ball great tonight, and I think that is something that we can do better, you pass it, the better shots you get. I thought we did a good job of that.
What did you see tonight from Theryn and how much did it mean for her and mean to you to have her back on the court?
I mean how fun was that! I mean I'm just so happy for it. It's been a journey. There's so much she's learned. There's just so many things she brings to the team And there's so many things she's still going to get back by playing live speed, game day basketball. I was teasing her. She should have had that pick six right before halftime. She was like 'The clock'. I'm like 'we worry about the clock when you get the lay up'. It's been great to have her back and one of the best parts of T is that she learned so much being out. And there's so much that comes back now by playing, playing, playing. Bust just the leadership piece, the willingness piece. I'm really happy for her, and glad she's here and it was great to have her back at the Breslin. How impressed are you with Monique and her first impression despite the limited time? Shes a really good player. She got here this fall, and it didn't take long to figure out she's a very good basketball player. She can really score, easy to play with, good off the ball. She's fast, she is an absolute joy to coach, hard worker, low maintenance, high performance you know. And she's played a lot of high level basketball and she has a real knack for putting the ball in the basket.
